Coffee

Sunday - German Poppy Coffee Cake

Yesterday, hubby and I made a trip to Phoenix to visit two German places. One is the only German butcher shop in the Valley (Germany Sausage Company), the other a German bakery (Old Heidelberg Bakery).  Not only can we get a taste of my home country at these two places, but I can speak German in these stores. You have no idea how much that means to me. You can take me out of Germany, but you can't take the German out of me.

What I mostly like though is that both places produce products without any preservatives. I was a little worried about that the bread would spike my hubby's blood sugar, but it didn't. So he too is enjoying some German food with me.

For today's Sunday project, I wanted to create an image of the German Poppy coffee cake I purchased at the bakery. The taste brought back so many beautiful memories from my childhood. The last time I had a slice of it was when I visited my mom in 2014 for her 75th birthday. The dishes I used in these images I purchased when I moved in to my first apartment in 1982 (I still like the design, but the coffee cup is a little too small these days).

Life is too short to say no to cake.

Sunday Creative Outlet

Honestly, I should have cleaned out our laundry room couple of years ago. I knew that the space would be my creative space. Being creative makes my heart and soul happy.

Today, for our Sunday project, I played with some Star Anise. I know that some people don't like the smell of it, however for me it is a beautiful smell. You see, I love really good licorice, and Star Anise smells like it. When I was young, one of my favorite liquor was Pernod - Classic, which is based on Star Anise, and not wormwood.

Now back to the image I had in mind for a long time. I wanted the Star Anise to be the star. However, I started out with just the Star Anise, but I couldn't really feel it with just that. So, I pulled out some coffee beans and cinnamon sticks. I like how this image turned out. Now, looking at the image, I am wondering if someone makes Cinnamon-Star Anise flavored coffee (Starbucks) ? Tazo makes a Sweet Cinnamon Spice Herbal tea, which includes Star Anise.

Sunday Morning Breakfast

I enjoy Sunday morning breakfast. It is leisure, laid back, nothing like the work week. I don't have to hurry, get ready for work. I can take my time. I can even make myself an egg. One thing that I miss greatly in Arizona? Getting farm fresh eggs at a farmer's market. We have them in Germany. Usually on Wednesdays and Saturdays all the farmers from the surrounding areas come to the city to sell their produce/fresh eggs/meats. I have found some eggs at our local Safeway that we really enjoy and they taste like eggs: Nellie's Free Range Eggs.

All happiness depends on a leisurely breakfast.

With this being said, here is what my Sunday morning breakfast looks like:
